Vermont Asthma-Friendly Schools Annual Recognition Program logo, recognizing schools for creating healthy, asthma-friendly learning environments.

We are proud to share that all five South Burlington schools — Gertrude Chamberlin School, Orchard School, Rick Marcotte Central School, Frederick H. Tuttle Middle School, and South Burlington High School — have earned Gold recognition through the Vermont Department of Health’s 2025–2026 Asthma Friendly Schools Recognition Program!

The program recognizes schools that take meaningful steps to improve indoor air quality, reduce common asthma triggers, and create healthy environments that help students with asthma fully participate in school.

A special congratulations and thank you to our SBSD “asthma champions” recognized by the Department of Health: Zoe Pion, Betsy Johnson, Sarah Pineda, Kerry Farrell, Kara Cassani, Michelle Cannon, Amanda Brown, and Karen Hudson. Their work — along with the efforts of staff throughout our schools — helped make this districtwide recognition possible.

Only 41 schools across Vermont received recognition at any level this year, making it especially exciting to see every SBSD school earn Gold!

Congratulations to our nurses, facilities staff, administrators, teachers, and everyone who helps keep our schools healthy places to learn and work.
