Four South Burlington Schools Earn Gold-Level Recognition for Asthma-Friendly Practices
The Vermont Department of Health has recognized four South Burlington schools — Rick Marcotte Central, Gertrude Chamberlin, Orchard, and Frederick H. Tuttle Middle School — as Asthma-Friendly Schools at the Gold Level for 2024–2025.
This designation honors schools that demonstrate outstanding commitment to student health by maintaining high indoor air quality, reducing asthma triggers, and ensuring that staff are trained in asthma care and emergency response.
The district also celebrates SBSD School Nurses Kerry Farrell, Darcy Mazlish, Kara Cassani, Michele Canon, and Sarah Pineda, who were all named Vermont Asthma Champions for their exceptional leadership in promoting asthma-friendly policies and supporting student health across all South Burlington schools.
The Asthma-Friendly Schools Program is an annual initiative encouraging schools to make measurable improvements in student wellness through safe cleaning practices, air-quality monitoring, and asthma awareness training.
“These recognitions reflect a districtwide culture of care,” said Dr. Joe Clark, Interim Superintendent. “We’re deeply proud of the teamwork between our nurses, facilities managers, and administrators in creating safe and supportive learning spaces for all.”
