Dear Parents/Guardians and Staff, |
There is only one month left of the school year! Spring flowers are fading, and summer weeds are popping up, as field hockey, baseball, and spring sports are in full swing. |

Thank you to all members of the South Burlington community who have taken the time to share their thoughts with the team supporting our work to design a new budget and staffing model and community engagement calendar for budget development. We heard from 178 individuals across all SBSD schools through the Budget Process Community Survey (possibly a record!), and over 20 SBSD staff, parents/guardians, and SB community members have participated in small group discussions to share their additional thoughts in their own words. These small group discussions have included community leaders, SBSD school staff identified by each principal, PTO and Booster leaders, and the community members who indicated they would be willing to share more in their survey response.
There are themes emerging in what we've heard across all engagement:
The community would like more clarity on how budget decisions are made and why. There is a desire for the website and the information posted on the budget process online to be easier to understand. There is a strong desire for the district to request feedback earlier and be responsive to community input as changes are proposed. Several individuals have raised concerns about levels of staffing and resource allocation.
A more detailed look at what was shared via the Budget Process Community Survey specifically can be found here.
The level of interest in this process and the feedback shared only reinforces how important this work is. In our next update, we look forward to introducing you to the members of the Budget Advisory Group, who will be meeting several times in May and June to develop a model and community engagement proposal for me to consider in close consultation with the Board. |

Students at SouthPoint, South Burlington's therapeutic and educational day program, have been developing their skills in bike mechanics, repair, and biking skills. They’ve collected bikes and received donations and are now hard at work getting them back on the road. Here are SouthPoint Director Katie Cunningham and Therapeutic Coordinator John Grimm, with the bikes. |
 |
Cunningham will be attending the school board meeting on May 21st to tell the board more about the work the students are doing! |
